Be the independent chicken

Like anything in life, having certainty is greatly valued. So when we start the conversation of financial independence, retirement planning, or whatever you want to call it, understanding WHY it’s so important can be such a hugely powerful platform to create positive momentum.

Let’s consider your daily grind for a moment. Let’s start with a little story…

It begins with a chicken, let’s call her Sue, hard at work in the barn, day after day. She loves her job, popping out fresh eggs every day for the farmer. And so it goes on, year after year, time passing by with all the changes that come with it. The chicken eventually has her own chicks, all growing up, going off on their exciting adventures. Her hard work to give them the life they desire has paid off. Her chicks eventually take their spot in the barn and begin to have chicks of their own.

Sue, now a granny chicken, is elated and can’t wait to spend more time with her ever growing family. She’s reached the point where she’d like to do things on her terms. The time has come for this chicken to stop the full-time grind. She’ll keep her hand in with some part-time work, helping the next generation of chicks through. Beyond that, she wants the flexibility to travel the world, see more of her grandchick’s, without the need for that monthly pay. She’s reached the point of financial independence and with that comes options…

So why should we focus on retirement planning and start to plan for our future financial independence as soon as possible? Well, just like the chicken, at some point your going to want to do things on your own terms. Your going to want to experience a side of life that offers more freedom, more choice, to tick off some of those ‘bucket list’ items that the daily barnyard grind just wouldn’t allow. It’s the ability to give yourself options – that’s where things get really exciting.

Reaching the point of financial independence is one of the biggest life transitions you will face. It can be quite a thought for those who haven’t given it the time and attention it deserves. For the well prepared, the savvy amongst us, it can be a moment of joy, optimism and opportunity. Think of it like a blank slate – you can literally pick up the chalk and start writing your own adventure, on your terms.

The WHY isn’t full of pensions, retirement jargon and riddles, the WHY is focused on you and what you want in life. The planning you’ve done in advance is simply the vehicle that will get you to your destination – financial independence.
