Dead Reckoning - Navigating your life journey

There was once a time when navigation relied heavily on estimates based on the direction and speed of travel from a known starting point.  However, these estimates were proven wildly inaccurate due to several variances including weather, tide and human factors.

This was the seafaring way of the 1700s, at a time when we were still getting to grips with navigation, the mysterious world around us, not to mention the rather tricky plight of scurvy whilst at sea. Of course, the latter point, had quite a simple answer in hindsight as we now know (fruit and veg of course!).

It all makes me think of the precarious position most of us find ourselves in – we are thrust out to sea and expected to navigate our way through life. Some of us may well know the destination (many do not!), but navigating across those unpredictable choppy waters with devious undercurrents and changeable winds presents quite the challenge. With no anchor to hold us steady, sails flapping in the wind and a sputtering engine, it would be quite easy to find ourselves in uncharted territory, and by that point it may well be too late.

However, if you can set out a destination (one which we know may be tweaked over time) we can set a path, a course for progress. As we are met with the many challenges life hits us with, we remind ourselves of the plan, our strong anchor if you will, which can hold us steady through the highs and lows of the lives we choose to lead. With compass to hand, a powerful motor and wind in our sales, we can sail forward with intent, knowing we have the fuel to push us towards our destination.

Therein lies the power of the plan, so rather than relying on a finger in the wind, we navigate our life now and going forward with clarity, allowing us to deploy what resources we have to enjoy now, whilst plotting  a course for tomorrow.
