Spentwell Retirement Masterclass Snapshot - Find your North Star

I had the pleasure of hosting another Spentwell Retirement Masterclass in October at Gleneagles Townhouse with 12 eager guests.

We covered our 12 key principles to embrace on your journey towards retirement, dispelled the myths and gave our guests some key tools they can leverage in the years ahead.

Our starting exercise, and one you can try yourself is ‘Finding your North Star’. You see before we can impart any guidance or advice the key is really in understanding what’s most important to you now and going forward in your life. However, when we think of our future selves that person can seem unrecognisable…that future self can seem quite hazy and therfore it can be diffuclt to imagine that future self.

One way you can start to combat this is to ‘get to know thy future self’. We gave our guests 5 minutes or so to think about what that meant for them, but its an exercise you can really dive into. It’s a discussion piece in our client meetings that can take a few hours, really going into depth around your goals, the drivers behind them and ultimately finding clear purpose and direction.

By getting to know thy self and establishing your North Star, we then have something to aim for. Of course, we recognise we might need to course correct on the way and that North Star may change over time; but by allowing ourselves the time to dwell and think deeply in this space we give ourselves the opportunity to make gradual steps towards whats most important.

So here’s an exercise you can try yourself. Take a A4 piece of paper, draw a stick person in the middle then start to populate bubbles around the page. Within those bubbles add in what you’d like to achieve now and going forward as well as how you’d like to feel. Keep it punchy.

Once you have your North Star, you can then work backwards and start to map out the steps you need to take to get you to your goals.

PS take it somewhere you can relax and really get into this, perhaps over a glass of wine or two and some good food. Enjoy!
